The laboratory studies are not helpful for determining the treatment and cause of tracheal cancer and usually the doctor suggest some tests for its diagnosis.

Imaging Test used for Trachea Cancer’s Diagnosis

Following test are used in the diagnosis of Tracheal cancer such as

Bronchoscopy:

It is a diagnostic procedure that helps the doctor in the evaluation of most pneumonic processes. The basic purpose of it to pinpoint the obstruction whether intrinsic to bronchial /tracheal lumen or extrinsic that causing compression.  This test must be performed under extreme condition because there is high risk of acute airway in this method.

Chest Radio Radiography:

It is less sensitive method that is used in the diagnosis of tracheal cancer. The doctor gets some diagnostic clues like tracheal narrowing, postobstructive atelectasis or pneumonia, or abnormal calcification. With the mean of such clues doctor get an idea about the presence of Tracheal Tumor.

Planar Tomography:

It is a sensitive method used for the diagnosis of Trachea tumor.

CT scan:

This method is preferable than that of Planar Tomography.  It is best perfomed with the help of a spiral or helical scanner as through it the doctor gets the precise volumetric acquisition and multiplanar image display. Moreover this method help in distinguishing the mucosal from submucosal masses and it also let the doctor to know about the extent of mucosal masses in the body.

MRI:

This imaging technique is employed in case of tracheal tumor as through it the doctor get the better evaluation of  extension into tissue planes and vascular anatomy.

Now we again come to discuss some probable causes of trachea cancer. In most cases of this cancer doctors get no information about any cause. On the other hand, the squamous call cancer of trachea is resulted due to a viral infection sometimes. While the doctors also linked smoking habit in the human with this type of trachea tumor.

Squamous cell cancer of trachea is also depending on the age factor; as the disease increase with the increase in age. According to some studies it is revealed that this form of trachea cancer is more likely to affect a man over age 60.

Some studies have shown that both man and woman are equally affected by Trachea cancer and it becomes apparent between 40-60 ages. Though in another study, it is said that a man is are more likely to become a victim of this tumor in comparison of woman. The main cause of this problem in man may be the excessive smoking habit.

As with most cancers the causes of trachea cancer are unknown although there have been links to smoking as a contributing factor especially in smokers over 60. As the trachea is so tough usually a lump is not present, the symptoms of trachea cancer typically include coughing, breathless and general wheezing. It may also include fevers, chest infections and chills that keep returning, it should be noted however that all these symptoms could be something other than cancer and a self diagnosis is not recommended.

Usually the cancer is so rare that it is mistaken for asthma or a similar illness so if the doctor is concerned a number of tests will be carried to check the extent of the problem. An x-ray is usually carried out eventhough it is unlikely to show the trachea cancer itself and a CT and an MRI scan may be used to assess whether the cancer has spread. To examine the trachea even closer a tube fitted with a camera maybe sent into the trachea via your mouth but not before the appropriate anaesthetic is administered, once inside the camera will take pictures and samples of the area will be taken analysis.

The cancer is so rare that doctors do not have a standard way of staging it so the doctor will simply explain what it is and the various treatments that are available. Treatment usually involves surgery, however the trachea is very important for breathing and sometimes there is too much cancer to remove safely in which case radiotherapy is used to kill the cancer.
